THIIS Is It…

ImageThe way I see it, Jozi’s Culture/Music websites have not really been on par, as of late, with Cape Tonian sites. Over the past few years we’ve seen the likes of Don’t Party, Mahala, My City By Night, BMP Life / BPM Mag and Cape Town Alive come onto the scene to become the authority on whats going on with young people’s general experience in South Africa (Of course JHB Live and MIO are still at it, and still very much an authority on SA music / culture but they’re the ones who’ve managed to stay alive for over a decade). But I’m not really sure what has been the Joburg equivalent recently. This is probably due to my sheltered / bubbled Cape Town existence so I am certainly keen on any website / blog suggestions.

But this is honestly the reason why I was so impressed by www.thiis.co.za when I first saw it. It comes across as a combo of all the sites mentioned above, but with a distinctly J-Sek focus it would seem. And this is important. Cape Town may host many of the country’s hot-shot creatives, but Joburg is a true representation of South African culture and vibrancy more than iKapa. So when I was asked to produce a mixtape and track for the site, I jumped at the opportunity (actually that’s a lie, I took my sweet time about it, but thats not because I wasn’t super keen, but more because its the way us creatives in Cape Town do it: painfully slow).

This mix represents a lot of what I love about SA electronica and dance at the moment, with a distinct focus on “Richard the Third” production…. (Narcissist much?)…

THIIS Mixtape by Richard the Third

5. Spoek Mathambo – Gwababa (Krazy Fiesta Remix)

11. SFR – Nci Nci
12. Richard the Third – Dragonfly feat. Zaki Ibrahim

ImageThen there’s the track that Noku Phiri and I made for THIIS. I’ve always wanted to work with Nonku, she is truly one of the most gifted singers and lyricists I know, up there with, , dare I say, Zaki and Zolani. Having said that I certainly didn’t think it would result in “(THIIS) Unfortunate Fool” a piece of Trip-Hop infused Disco-Soul that is as foreboding and sinister as it is narcotically up-beat, and the perfect track for a wet, windy, cloudy, cold Cape Town winter. Check it out after the jump:

R&R – Thibo Tazz Remix

Image

My fellow Red Bull Music Academy alumni, Thibo Tazz remixed the track I did with the Ruffest, and its a beautiful slice of Kwaito-House the way that only a seasoned DJ and producer like Thabo (his real name) can pull off.

I’ve always admired Thibo Tazz: he’s focused, prolific, talented and one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. That sounds cliched, but trust me, he really is nice guy the way that I certainly can’t claim to be. I could never see Thabo getting miffed about, say, a badly-attended DJ set, something I certainly am guilty of.

Anyway take a listen and keep a look out for future projects by the one and only Thibo Tazz, a little birdy tells me there are BIG things on the horizon for iKapa’s hardest-working House DJ.

#FOMO

ImageBeen a looooong minute since I updated my blog last. Been gigging plenty and finishing up tracks for “Left Of Centre” which should be out on African Dope end of the month.

But before then I’d like to make note of a recent party I had the privilege of playing at: “#FOMO” The launch went down last week and the party will happen every Thursday at LB’s Lounge on Long Street (next to Fiction).

The idea is “You’ll only know who’s playing when you get there, adding to the FOMO if you didn’t make it but realised it’s the best music you never heard!” Its organised by Anthea Duce, who is one third of the reason why Cold Turkey is such a massive landmark jol, and judging from the turnout this past Thurs it should be a prime weekly throwdown.

One of the great initiatives of the party was to giveaway an EP to all those that were invited featuring tracks by Jumping Back Slash, Big Space, Marco Nicolas Filby (where do I find this cat’s music online?!) and the joint I produced with Jozi emcee Fifi, the incredibly talented artist on Iapetus Records.

Take a listen to the track, and make sure to click on the names above to take you through to the respective websites and pages:

PS. DONT MISS #FOMO THIS THURS UNLESS YOU WANT TO MO

Speak Heavy

Tonight I played a gig at Zula (Ultimate x After Party) and I’m getting proper flu sick. So much so that sleep is restless and uncomfortable so I feel the need to update my neglected blog. I actually wanted to go into this year on a quiet note, ready myself with my upcoming album, “Left Of Centre” by not getting distracted by the CT DJing world which too often calls for hard-as-nails Bass music (Brostep, Drumstep, etc.). But I been booked pretty solidly for the past month and have had to keep me Gnarly A-Game up.

Fortunately I’ve had the chance to lay down two fresh DJ mixes. The 1st is a promo mix for a party that compadre’, Fuzzy Slippers and I threw at Waiting Room (hopefully do another cause it was fresh) which is straight up ol-skool-esque party music, mashed and mixed with a heavy dose of lekker-local flavour. The 2nd is a mix of all CT beats, on a heavy, bass tip; the kind of tracks I been playing at nights like Discotheque, Rubadub and See You Next Wednesday.

So cop ‘em on the down-low and hit me up if you want links to the individual tracks (tracklisting below embedded players).

EvildeMan

EvildeMan feat. Fifi

The history behind this track is as follows:

Lyricist and emcee Fifi was down in the Mother City for the Red Bull Music Academy Taster at the Red Bull Studio back in 2009. During that time I recorded her ontop of a basic drum-loop and live bassline courtesy of my Joburg homie Lionel Naidoo. I then produced the track properly, adding horn and harp samples from Logic (controversial I know, but someone has gotta use them right?) and later synth noodles and squiggles from the ES1.

The end result is EvildeMan, a slice of Future Soul Hip-Hop that will definitely be a feature on my up and coming album which is just about done and ready to be mastered. (More info to follow).

Otherwise keep and eye-and-ear on the look-and-listen out for         b, who is crafting her silky, raw combo or rap and song for the enigmatic Iapetus Records. I go back with some of these guys to my Hip-Hop days in Joburg and I’m still really feeling, but not nearly as in touch with, what they’re doing. There website’s looking good these days:

Baby, I Got Your Mashup

TerminateMyMoneySo this is the last bootleg / mashup I’m gonna post in a while. Making bootleg / mashups is fun and its a great way of having a fresh version of familiar crowd-pleaser in your DJ arsenal. Its also a quick and easy way to get some exposure by riding on the coat-tail of another artist’s music, and so if you focus on mashup / bootlegs too much, and they do take time, you end up not really growing as an artist.

This combo of DJ Cndo‘s township house banger “Terminator“, from a couple of years back, and ODB‘s straight up dirty-funk R&B and rap slammer, “Baby, I Got Your Money” is SA dancefloor gold, but also the least exciting mashup, and easiest to make, to be featured on this blog and my Soundcloud.

DJ Cndo vs. ODB – Terminate Your Money

Its also the last track in a recent mixtape I made to promote a party I threw with YBF man-about-town, Fuzzy Slippers, called Speak Easy at Waiting Room. Which reminds me, I think we just got paid for that, better pay the DJs so they can get some start-of-the-month Salty Crax love. Hopefully when I check my balance, baby, I’ll have the money.

Friday Night Yes I Know I Must Be Ready For You

You dont come around, to me see in the week
You dont have a chance, to call me on the phone
You dont come around, to me see in the week
You dont have a chance, to call me on the phone

But Friday night yes I know, yes I know
I know I must be ready for you, just be waiting for you
Friday night yes I know, yes I know
I know I must be ready for you, just be waiting for you

[Chorus]
I’m no weekend, weekend special
I’m no weekend, weekend special
I’m no weekend, weekend special
I’m no weekend, weekend special

I’m no weekend, (daddy’s home) weekend special
I’m no weekend, (daddy’s home) weekend special

[Verse 2]
Another lonely night, on my own again
How along for your love
I need your touch, yes I do
You dont come around, to me see in the week
You dont have a chance, to call me on the phone

But Friday night yes I know, yes I know
I know I must be ready for you, just be waiting for you
Friday night yes I know, yes I know
I know I must be ready for you, just be waiting for you

[Bridge]
I’m your weekend special…
I’m your weekend special…
I’m no weekend special…
That is all…

I’m no weekend, weekend special (x4)

You dont love me no more… (x3)
You dont love me no more… I know
